Sports journalist Grant Wahl, who was in Qatar covering the World Cup, died this Friday (9) after feeling sick during the match between the Netherlands and Argentina. The American was 48 years old.

The death was confirmed by the United States football federation through a post on social networks. “All of US Soccer are heartbroken to learn that we have lost Grant Wahl,” the federation said.

ESPN reporter Francisco de Laurentiis reported on his Twitter profile that he was in the press stands near Wahl when the incident happened. The sudden illness occurred during overtime of the game in question.

No further information regarding Grant’s death was released. In recent days he would have had a case of bronchitis, reported by himself during his participation in a podcast that was published last Thursday (8). The journalist revealed that he had a lot of coughs, as well as other colleagues.

BARRED FOR WEARING LGBTQIA+ SHIRT

A few weeks ago, Grant Wahl was barred from trying to enter his country’s match for wearing a shirt with a rainbow print, one of the LGBTQIA+ symbols.

“A security guard refused to let me into the stadium for USA v Wales. You have to change your shirt. It’s not allowed,” he shared on his social media.

Grant’s brother, Eric Wahl, said in a video posted on Instagram that the journalist had since received death threats. He believes that his brother may have been murdered.
