Harry Kane was the highlight of English newspapers after England’s 2-1 defeat by France in the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Qatar, because of the missed penalty in the 39th minute of the second half, which could take the game for the extension.

“Kane doesn’t,” wrote The Sun tabloid, which said “England are out of the World Cup after captain sent the second penalty miles out”.

The Guardian also quoted the attacker: “Poor Kane”. But he noted that “England lost to a brilliant team”.

The Daily Mail, on the other hand, detonated the referee Wilton Pereira Sampaio, despite the fact that he gave two penalties to the English – one converted and the other lost by Kane.

“England are out of the World Cup, as Kane laments the missed penalty and the nation vents its anger at the Brazilian referee, who has given a series of dubious decisions,” wrote the newspaper.

According to the newspaper, the judge would have reversed fouls and failed to mark another penalty on Kane, in the 24th minute of the first half. After a quick VAR check, the Brazilian sent the game on and nothing scored.

Marca, from Spain, highlighted another character: Frenchman Griezman, player of Atlético de Madrid. For the newspaper, he serves the semifinal on a platter. Griezmann provided the assist on France’s two goals, by Tchouameni and Giroud.

In France, L’Equipe also highlights Griezmann’s performance and says that the midfielder, with two assists, reaches 28 with the selection’s shirt, surpassing the then record holder Tierry Henry, who had 27.
