After World Cup defeat, Moroccans clash with police in Brussels

About 100 football fans, some draped in Moroccan flags, clashed with police on Wednesday night (14) in central Brussels, Belgium, after Morocco lost 2-0 to France in the World Cup semifinals, according to Reuters reporters at the scene.

Fans, gathered near Brussels-South station, threw fireworks and other objects at the rows of police dressed in riot gear and set fire to some rubbish bags and cardboard boxes. Police responded with water cannons and tear gas.

The clashes were quick and without serious damage, but several fans were detained.

Morocco was the first African team to reach the semifinals of a World Cup. With the defeat to France, the Lions of the Atlas will dispute the third place, against Croatia, this Saturday (17).

After the game, coach Walid Regragui highlighted the importance of the dispute for third place. “We have to rebuild ourselves psychologically and try to recover the injured players because we want to finish third. I want to win this game anyway, I do everything to win. We had a good campaign, with the support of the fans. We know that to win the World Cup It’s not easy,” he said.
