Among the many photos that show Lionel Messi with the FIFA Cup in his hands in Qatar, a record, taken by a photographer from the Reuters agency, is very reminiscent of an image from 36 years ago, of Diego Maradona champion.
Messi appears at the stadium carried by Kun Agüero, a former strike partner in the Argentine national team. In a very similar photo, Maradona is in the Azteca stadium, in Mexico, “in the arms of the people”, also holding the coveted trophy with his right hand.
In 1986, when Maradona captained the team, Argentina won the second world championship. With Messi in the same position, and with the same number 10 shirt, the Argentines reached the tri.
Messi’s friend, Agüero, 34, who left football early in 2021 after having a cardiac arrhythmia, was the brother-in-law of “Pibe de Oro”, who died in 2020 at the age of 60.
Messi and Maradona are considered the two best Argentine players of all time and are also among the best in football history.
