Budweiser takes beer to Argentina that could not be sold at the World Cup

by

Budweiser announced that it has taken the unsold beers from the World Cup from Qatar to Argentina, as part of a promise it had made in November, shortly after the host country of the World Cup did not authorize the sale of drinks in stadiums and in their surroundings.

The company announced that it will hold Fan Fests in some Argentine cities, such as Buenos Aires and Rosario, the hometown of Lionel Messi and Ángel di María, and Córdoba. It’s unclear whether the beer will be sold or distributed to fans at these venues. At the events, there will also be musical attractions, according to the company.

In addition, the American company announced, on its Twitter, promotions, such as one in partnership with a local delivery application that consists of doubling the number of beers purchased by the user.

There is also distribution of a 473 ml can for those who, after registering on a website, are willing to go to certain shops to withdraw the prize. The packaging is styled to commemorate the Argentine title. Messi appears in them. This action is valid until Friday (23).

Two days before the World Cup, Qatar announced that it would not allow the sale of alcoholic beverages in or near stadiums. Only at Fan Fests could the liquid be sold. The sale of alcohol is not prohibited, but rather difficult, in the Muslim country.

The decision took Budweiser, sponsor of the World Cup, by surprise. The company paid FIFA $75 million to sell its products at the event.

During the World Cup, foreign fans struggled to get alcohol. In addition to restricted sales, the substance is expensive in Qatar.
