As in the women’s race, the São Silvestre men’s race in 2022 had an African champion. The winner was Andrew Kwemoi, 22, champion for the first time and Uganda’s first representative to top the podium in the competition.
Joseph Panga, from Tanzania, crossed the finish line in second place, and fellow Ugandan Maxwell Rotich completed the podium. Fábio Jesus Ferreira was the best Brazilian in the category and finished in fourth place.
The last Brazilian victory in the São Silvestre men’s event took place in 2010, with Marílson Gomes dos Santos.
Since then, there have been ten African winners, in addition to Ethiopian Dawit Fikadu Admasu, who won in 2017 as a representative of Bahrain, the country for which he became naturalized after his first victory in the Brazilian race, in 2014.
With Kwemoi’s victory, Uganda enters the list of men’s titles in São Silvestre for the first time. Kenya tops that ranking with 15 wins. Brazil is second, with 11.
The 97th edition of São Silvestre marked the return of normality at the event after the Covid-19 pandemic. After being suspended in 2020 due to restrictions caused by the coronavirus, last year’s edition had been held with a limit of subscribers (22 thousand).
This time, without limitation, the race had 32,000 participants, according to the organizers.
The main street race in Latin America has a total length of 15 km through the streets and avenues of the city of São Paulo. Both the start and finish take place on Avenida Paulista.
The route also passes through well-known points in the city, such as the Pacaembu stadium, Praça da República and the corner of Avenida Ipiranga and Rua São João.
