Grêmio announced this Saturday (31) the signing of Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez, 35 years old. Last season, he played for Nacional-URU, the club that introduced him to football, and which he left at the age of 19 to play in Europe.
He signed with the team from Rio Grande do Sul for two seasons, until December 2024.
In the attack of the team from Rio Grande do Sul, the striker will have competition from Diego Souza, the club’s top scorer in the 2022 season.
Multi-champion for Barcelona-ESP and other major clubs in world football, such as Liverpool-ING and Atlético de Madrid-ESP and Ajax-HOL, Luis Suárez is one of the leaders of the Uruguayan national team and was highlighted mainly in the 2010 Cup, when the Celeste team took fourth place.
At that World Cup, he was the protagonist of a controversial move that went down in World Cup history: in the last moments of the quarterfinals, he defended, with his hands, an almost certain goal from Ghana. Expelled, he saw the African team miss the penalty and the game ended in a draw. Afterwards, Ghana lost on penalties and were eliminated by the Uruguayans.
One of the veteran leaders of the Celestial team in the Qatar Cup, the striker ended the tournament crying on the bench despite his team’s 2-0 victory over Ghana. That’s because South Korea defeated Portugal and took the second place in the group, eliminating Celeste in the first phase of the tournament. At the age of 35, this could have been Suarez’s last Cup.
For Barcelona, the star made one of the great attacking trios in world football at the time, with Lionel Messi and Neymar. For the Catalan club, he won the Spanish Super Cup (2016 and 2018), the Copa del Rey (2014/15, 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2017/18), in addition to the Spanish Championship in the seasons 2014/15, 2015/ 16, 2017/18 and 2018/19, a Champions League (2014/15) and the 2015 Club World Cup.
