by

He did it… a habit o Panathinaikos! The champions of Greece who had a big day with Fernando Hernandez (26 points) won 3-1 set him PAOK in the final of the Super Cup in a terrible match in Heraklion, Crete and won the first title of the season!

A minute’s silence was observed before the start of the match as it was ten years since the unexpected death of the legendary Nikos Samaras.

The match:

The game started with the two teams going point by point, focusing mainly on the block! THE Van de Dries he was the main spokesman for the “double-headed of the north” while on the opposite bank Kovar was pushing Panathinaikos. Costa and Rangel fought epic battles over the net, with Hernandez and Van de Dries taking over. At the most critical point of the set, the Cuban winger of Panathinaikos “spoke” who made it 22-18 with an ace, with the set ending after a misfired serve by Raptis and an excellent hit by Kovar, and the champions made the 25-20 for 1-0.

In the second set Josko Milekonski’s team was visibly improved in both reception and blocking as Hernandez continued to…carry Panathinaikos. The set was balanced until the middle, with PAOK taking a serious four-point lead with an ace from Van de Dries for the 16-12. Costa’s block from that point on was unreachable with PAOK reaching +5 and Panathinaikos coming back with Kovar’s crescendo and the excellent performance of Fragos. Several borderline hits by the players of both teams brought the referee to the video check several times with Jacobsen winning the point and making it 24-24. The set turned into a thriller with the score changes being consecutive and the Day to take the set for PAOK with 34-32

Panathinaikos was clearly improved in third set and was fortunate to be quickly preceded by 10-7 by Petraea to break the PAOK block in the first year and Hernandez to do it 14-9 with strong stud in double block. In fact, the “greens” took a lead of seven points with Rangel and reached 2-1 with Kovar to do 25-19.

In the fourth set Dimitris Andreopoulos’ team started sluggishly and found themselves at -3 by PAOK thanks to excellent attacks by Tailor and Costa. However, Kovar with Hernandez and Rangel signaled the turnaround and brought the match to 14-14 bringing good psychology back to the “greens”. Then the Rangel he won the video check he called for, and Hernandez with an ace and a block brought the match to 20-17! PAOK managed to reduce with Raptis and Voulkidis to one point but the champions were cooler and reached the victory with Hernandez who finished the final with 28 points making the 25-22 and presenting the trophy to Panathinaikos.
