“It will be sad if confirmed” the announcements about the closure of a French institute in Iran, says Paris
The decision to close a French institute in Iran in retaliation for the Charlie Hebdo cartoons satirizing Ali Khamenei and the mullahs was received by Tehran. The Iranian regime has been outraged over the satirical cartoons.
The French foreign ministry has not been officially informed of the closure of a French institute in Iran in retaliation for cartoons published Wednesday by a French satirical newspaper, Paris said today, stressing that the reports “would be regrettable if confirmed”.
“We have not received any official information at this time in relation to the announcements made through the press by the Iranian authorities about the closure of the French Research Institute in Iran (IFRI),” emphasized the spokeswoman for the Center d’Orsay Anne-Claire Legendre. . “This information will certainly be sad if confirmed.”
The spokeswoman added that the institute was “an important place of culture and exchange”, created by the merger in 1983 of the French Archaeological Mission in Iran which was founded in 1897 and the French Institute of Iranology in Tehran which was founded in 1947 by (the French philosopher and orientalist s.s.) Henri Corben”.
The Iranian authorities warned France on Wednesday that they would take action after satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo published cartoons deemed offensive to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s most senior religious and political figure, on the same day.
“The ministry is ending the activities of the French Research Institute in Iran (IFRI) as a first step,” Iran’s foreign ministry said in a statement.
Prior to this announcement, French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonnade had insisted on the fact that there is freedom of the press in France.
