The coach of Aris spoke about the exclusion from Olympiakos for the Cup, the departure of Daniel Mancini for Panathinaikos, the upcoming difficult game with AEK, but also the possible transfer reinforcement for the rest of January, Alan Pardew.
What Aris’ coach said in detail:
On how the team is doing after being eliminated from the Cup by Olympiakos: “We feel disappointed. We believe we should have gotten more out of these matches. We have to take into account the normal goal in the first leg, which was disallowed and which would have tipped the scales in our favor for qualification.”
“The second game was very unlucky for us, because we had four clear chances to score before the penalty. Perhaps due to bad luck, perhaps due to the desperate defense of the opponent, we were not able to score. We raised our defense after the penalty and at that point we conceded the goal, which was more disappointing for the fans of our team.”
“We have a feeling of great disappointment. The biggest disappointment, however, is the loss of Manu Garthia, with his serious injury. We all feel bad for him. He scored a hat trick last week and now we’re missing him. And he himself loses the ability to work and improve every day. Big disappointment for us and our fans for the exclusion, but more so for Manu Garthia”.
On the loss of Mancini, but also the possible transfer reinforcement of the team: “First of all, the loss of Mancini was something unpleasant for us. Manu’s injury worsened the situation. What I am about to say is very important. This club, Aris, considers itself a big team. Our club is as big as AEK, PAOK, Olympiacos, Panathinaikos. But we don’t have the proper infrastructure, nor the funding that these groups have. We have the story and the emotion.
The issue of transfers is essential, fundamental for this group. If in this transfer window we do not manage to bring in a player, it will be because we have not found the right one to raise the team level, while there are four days left to complete the transfer window. The team’s success in previous periods had to do with its transfer reinforcement. And good work has been done on it, as well as some things that shouldn’t have been done.
That’s why we have to be very careful in this transfer period, not to make the same mistakes. This is not a message that the president gave me to convey to the world, but it is what my experience as a coach says.”
For how many players is needed to strengthen the roster: “It could be one, it could be two, it could be none. If it’s not the right player, the right players, who are going to level us up, don’t make us.”
For the upcoming match with AEK: “We have played a lot of difficult games this month. This is the last hard one and then we will have 6-7 days to prepare the next one. We’ve lost Mancini, we don’t have Manu, it won’t be Camara, Camacho, maybe even Odubajo.
All this is not an excuse, but it is a reality. If we manage against AEK to reach the level of performance we had against Olympiakos, we have odds in our favor. All the work we do shows in our performance. The goal eludes us, but it will come.”
On his absence from the press room after the match against Olympiakos: “It’s very important that the teammates know that I respect them. That I have a responsibility to answer what happened in the game. However, we experienced difficult times after the match.
Don’t let the fans of our team believe that we didn’t suffer from the exclusion. We hurt a lot about it. I was so hurt about the whole effort and not winning that I couldn’t talk.”
