Kalamata: The former owner of “Black Storm” Stavros Papadopoulos has died

He passed away at the age of 89 Stavros Papadopoulos, after cardiac problems he had been dealing with lately. The Greek businessman associated his name with the golden years of Kalamatawhen the “Black Storm” had competed in the big league highlighting players such as Lymberopoulos, Georgeas, Boateng, Ofrikue, Soares, Hanga and others.

In the 1999/2000 season, Kalamata finished ninth in the league and reached the semi-finals of the Cup, the best year in its history. Even Stavros Papadopoulos was involved with Messiniakos and in fact the stadium of the historic club bears his name.

Stavros Papadopoulos was born in Kalamata on March 9, 1934, the child of a large family and the son of Panagiotis Papadopoulos with a shoe factory on Germanou Street in Kalamata. Its core business was the trading of precious stones based in Brazil and Hong Kong. He was the owner of the “Filoxenia” hotel, while he was also involved in the media, being a major shareholder of the NET television station and the owner of the “Simaia” newspaper. In recent years, he founded the modern “Papadopouleion” Care Unit for the Elderly in the Messinian capital. His body will be taken to Kalamata within the week for his funeral.
