The World Is a Ball: Young people, scorers and bargains close to Europe’s most wanted

by

In the current transfer window of European football, which runs until the end of the month, the dream of consumption of the main teams are two strikers: Erling Haaland and Dudsan Vlahovic.

With the help of Haaland’s goals, Dortmund are runners-up in the Bundesliga, and Vlahovic has been vital for Fiorentina to be in the top half of the table, in eighth place, in the fight for a place in a European club.

In common, the Norwegian and the Serbian are 21 years old, are tall (1.94 m and 1.90 m), are left-handed and are top scorers in their clubs, Borussia Dortmund and Fiorentina.

This season, Haaland has scored 18 goals in 16 games for the club – including the Bundesliga and the European Champions League – and Vlahovic, 19 goals in 23 matches, including the Serie A and Coppa Italia.

They also have something in common that makes the dream of interested parties more difficult to achieve: the high market value.

According to the website Transfermarkt, which specializes in evaluating footballers’ values, Haaland is currently worth €150 million (R$948 million), and Vlahovic, €70 million (R$442 million).

Even the big clubs think and rethink before deciding, if they have that money, if it’s worth the effort.

The market value, it should be noted, is an estimate.

The clubs to which the two goalscorers are linked consider that each one is worth much more than these figures, and push the price up. Ditto the entrepreneurs.

The Norwegian has as agent Mino Raiola, one of the most prominent in this segment – he takes care of the careers of French Pogba and Italian Donnarumma, among other famous players. The Serbian’s interests are in the care of the company International Sports Office.

To count on Haaland, who has a contract with Dortmund until 2024, the amount needed to be paid is around €300 million (R$ 1.9 billion), which would set a record in a football negotiation.

To get Neymar out of Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain paid €222 million in 2017.

For Vlahovic, the request would be at approximately € 100 million (R$ 632 million). The Serbian has a contract with Fiorentina until 2023. Arsenal, from England, accepts to pay 30% less.

There is, however, the possibility of a big club getting a top scorer, young like these two, from important leagues on the old continent, for a much lower price.

There are options in Italy, England, the Netherlands and Portugal, with prices ranging from €1.5 million (R$9.5 million) to €10 million (R$63.2 million), according to Transfermarkt.

The biggest “bargain” is the Spaniard Fran Navarro, Gil Vicente’s number 9.

With 11 goals, he is third in the Portuguese League’s top scorers list (11 goals in 17 games). He is 23 years old, 1.79 m and played for his country’s youth teams until 2016.

One of the least expensive (€10 million) is Portuguese Roberto Gomes, aka Beto, 23.

The Udinese number 9 has scored eight goals in 18 matches in Serie A. He is the same height (1.94 m) and even the same weight (88 kg) as Haaland. The difference is that he is right-handed.

Belgian Loïs Openda, 21, with a market value of €4 million, is the main revelation of this season at Eridivisie.

On Saturday (15), he scored the winning goal (1-0) for Vitesse, fourth, over Feyenoord, third. He has 11 goals (in 19 games), just one behind the competition’s top scorer, Sébastien Haller, from the mighty Ajax.

Also in the Dutch Championship, Jesper Karlsson, 23, stands out, who scored eight times in 19 matches for AZ Alkmaar.

The Swede plays on the sides of the field and is valued, like Beto, at €10 million.

In England, the one who has been drawing attention is a Nigerian with a market value of €8 million.

With eight goals and 18 Premier League appearances, Emmanuel Dennis, 24, is one of Watford’s rare hopes of escaping relegation.

The last leading striker with an inviting value (€4 million) is Frenchman Simon Banza.

At 25 years old, he is also the oldest among those mentioned. There are eight goals in 14 matches for the small Famalicão, third from last place in the Portuguese.

Banza and Beto are the only ones who do not belong to their current clubs, but to Lens (France) and Portimonense (Portugal), respectively. Each loan agreement expires at the end of June.
