Sebastian Coe will serve his third term as WA president, formally confirmed at the World Classics Federation election on Thursday. The 66-year-old, a former Olympic gold medalist and world champion in the 1,500 meters, was the only candidate for the position of “strong” man at the Congress which was held in Budapest, two days before the start of the World Athletics Championships.
The positions of vice-presidents were occupied by the Spanish Raul Chapado, the Spanish Chimera Restrepo and Adil Sumariwala (India) and Jackson Tugei (Kenya).
What is impressive about the process concerns the election of 11 women to a total of 13 council member positions.
In detail, the 13 members are: Yoko Arimari (Japan), Anna Riccardi (Italy), Annette Purvis (South Zealand), Nawal El Mutawkal (Morocco), Nan Wang (China), Abby Hoffman (Canada), Natalia Dobrinska ( Ukraine), Silvia Barlag (Netherlands), Beatrice Agikoru (Uganda), Willie Banks (USA), Andi Pilakoski (Finland), Sidonie Mothersylne (Cayman), Donna Raynor (Bermuda)
The council will be flanked by a man and a woman, members of the athletes’ committee and the presidents of the federations of the five continents.
