The unions representing players in Spain’s women’s soccer league called off their strike after reaching an agreement on minimum wages, Futbol Profesional Femenino (FPF) announced on Thursday.
The players went on strike earlier this month, ahead of the first two matches of the season, after negotiations over better conditions and pay broke down.
“The commitment and repeated efforts of the clubs during the negotiation process contributed significantly to the achievement of the peace scenario, without losing sight of the sustainability of the event,” the FPF said in a statement.
“A scenario that we hope will show the way to the rest of the institutions that are part of Spanish sport and will allow the venture of women’s professional football to move forward.”
The FPF is the organizing body of the premier women’s football league in Spain.
Rubiales and the boycott
The strike came shortly before Luis Rubiales resigned this week as head of the Spanish soccer federation amid widespread condemnation for kissing Spanish player Jenny Hermoso on the lips.
The player’s non-consensual kiss at the medal ceremony after the national team won the World Cup last month sparked a storm of reaction inside and outside of Spain.
The entire World Cup-winning team and other top female soccer players in Spain had said they would boycott the women’s national team as long as the federation’s leadership remained in place.
The amount of the minimum wage
The parties have signed an agreement for the next three seasons, which guarantees a minimum salary of 21,000 euros for the current season, with the possibility of an increase to 23,000 euros depending on the increase in commercial income.
The minimum wage for next season will be €22,500, with the possibility of rising to €25,000, while the minimum wage for the final season covered by the deal was set at €23,500, with the possibility of rising to €28,000.
