The Greek coach referred to the reasons that led the two sides to reach this point, saying that he had agreed from the beginning with Vangelis Liolio to work unprofitably for the “blue and white”.
At the same time, he emphasized that he gave the last ounce of his strength for her National and from the beginning his goal was to unite everyone around her. However, his obligations with Fenerbahce do not allow him to remain in the position of coach!
He made sure to thank everyone, from the EEC administration to the players and fans, sending a message of support to the Greek team at the end.
His post in detail:
“In March 2022, after the invitation and honor given to me by the president of the Federation, Mr. Liolios, he assumed the position of coach of the Greek National Team. A position that I have always considered an honor to be invited and an obligation to undertake.
In all the time I gave my all for the success of our National Team. Despite the adversities our national team encountered, I believe that we fought with all our strength to represent our country with respect, combativeness and self-sacrifice.
After the recent World Championship, the National Team enters a year where it managed to qualify to compete in the pre-Olympic tournament with the aim of qualifying for the Olympiad. This tournament will take place just a few weeks after the end of the obligations of the EuroLeague team that are starring in their championships.
My thought from the first moment he took over our National Team was that it should unite. It is the team of all Greeks and we have an obligation to put it above our personal will and our personal interest. In this particular case, my personal will is to lead our National Team to the upcoming pre-Olympic tournament.
However, the obligations I have with my club, which ends just a few weeks before the start of the pre-Olympic tournament, do not allow my availability to the extent that I believe the preparation for such an important tournament requires.
Therefore, in consultation with the president of the federation, Mr. Liolio, we decided that I would stand by the federation and our national team on a non-profit basis only with my advice and opinion whenever and if it is needed.
In this period of a year and a half, I felt the embrace and the wish of all the healthy Greek fans and this filled me even more than the titles I have won at the team level.
Personally, I gave the last ounce of my strength to represent our country worthily while I was filled with pride and humility realizing how small the individual size of all of us is, in front of the greatness of representing the country and participating in our National team
I want to thank all the players, coaches and staff who made themselves available for the National Team both in the training sessions and in the windows of the competitions as well as in the Pan-European and World Championships.
Above all, I want to thank all the fans who loved and love our National Team and whose love we have felt all this time and to ask them to support her in the effort that will make her qualify for the Olympiad”.
