European premiere in Poland for AEK

by

This year’s European trip of AEK will start from Poland. The “yellow and black” will face the Polish Gornik Zabrze in the premiere of the 2nd group of the EHF European League.

The goal, of course, is to start on the right, against the relatively inexperienced team. Gornik Zabrze played last year for the first time in the competition and was eliminated in the qualifiers, while it is the first time in its history that it starts from the group stage.

She counts a total of six participations in European competitions, with five of them being in the Europa Cup, where she has not particularly made her presence felt.

The new system of conduct

The EHF European Cup will be held this year with a new format. The 32 participating teams will be divided into eight groups of four teams.

The top two from each group – 16 in total – advance to the final group stage, where they will again be divided into four groups of four teams.

The first teams of each group get a direct ticket to the quarter-finals, while the second and third teams play play-offs in double matches home and away.

The winners of the quarter-finals will advance to the Final-4, scheduled for May 25/26, 2024.

Djukic: “We’ll give it our all, it’s not just another day at work”

THE Dragan Dzukicwho will have all his players at his disposal for this year’s European opener, said: “We played our last game in the league on Wednesday in Thessaloniki, so we had enough time to prepare properly for the premiere. Our opponent is in very good form. It is a team that plays concentrated, aggressive, fast, led by a very quality and experienced coach that they trust. They play differently compared to the teams we have faced in the Greek Championship and I am sure that we will all throw our good cards into the game from the start. Although it is only the first game, it is extremely important for everyone involved. We’ll give it our all, it’s not just another day at work.

I am convinced that we are in for an exciting game in which our opponents are the favourites, not only because of the situation they are in now, but because they are also playing at home. But for our part we want to give our best in every game and we believe in ourselves and the things we are training for. Let the game begin!”.
