Only the gold medal was missing from yesterday’s presence of the Greek Olympic taekwondo on the 2nd day of the European boys and girls championship hosted in Belgrade.
Three finals, three silver medals and a fifth place were added to our country’s tally in the event that ends today in the Serbian capital. With yesterday’s three medals, Greece reached eight in this year’s event, namely two gold, five silver and one bronze.
Evangelos Pantos (-160cm), Georgios Stamatelias (-164cm) and Lamprini Asimaki (-168cm) climbed to the second step of the winners’ podium, while Giorgos Iliopoulos was fifth at -168cm.
A two-pointer received exactly six-tenths of a second before the end of the third period deprived Asimaki of the gold medal. The Greek champion scored three wins on the way to the final, but in the final against Alasac from France, she lost 4-10, 11-6, 7-5, taking second place.
Pantos and Stamatelias scored three victories before reaching the final, where they were defeated by two athletes competing under the ETU flag. Pantos, who advanced to the final after defeating Cypriot Khatzimauros, was defeated 13-17 and 9-21 by Shaikhamagomedov, while Stamatelias, who qualified for the final after defeating Turk Baykara, lost in the final to Cheremnik by 0-3, 0-9.
