A day before the start of the NBA season, Mr John Antetokounmpo shake up the waters by signing three-year contract extension with the Buckswhich will bring him a total of approx 186 million dollars!
The new deal ties the Greek Freak to Milwaukee at least until 2027, that is, for two additional years compared to the super-max he had signed in 2020 for $228.2 million and which bound him until 2025, with an option of his own for the 2025/26 season. The new contract gives the 29-year-old ace an option for the 2027/28 season.
In practice, the new agreement guarantees (unless something unexpected happens in the meantime) that magic, at least in theory, duo of Giannis and Damian Lillard will travel together for at least three seasonsas Dame is under contract with the Bucks until 2026 and has an option for 2026/27 himself.
“Mythical” contract
Giannis Antetokounmpo with the new deal he will become the NBA’s third highest-paid player in 2025/26, second in 2026/27 and first in 2027/28, at current rates. The Greek Freak has received for the next season (2023/24) 45.6 million dollars and for the next (2024/25) 48.7 million dollars and will be only the seventh and eleventh respectively the most expensive player in the league respectively in this two-year period. Indicatively, the first for this year and next year will be Steph Curry of the Warriors with 51.9 million and 55.7 million dollars.
Based on the 2020 contract, Giannis would have collected $51.5 million for 2025/26, but that’s when the new deal with the Bucks will go into effect. That projects $57.6 million for 2025/26, another $62.2 million for 2026/27, while he has the option for 2027/28 for $66.8 million.
We’re talking fabulous amounts, which roughly translates to… $756,000 for each game, $189,000 for each twelve minutes and $23,625 for each minute played (based on average attendance at 32 minutes per match).
If Giannis Antetokounmpo runs out of his contract with the Bucks, meaning he stays until 2028, then he will have earned from his NBA contracts $460.3 million! Already in his 11 career seasons in the league, he has gotten out of his contracts with Milwaukee 234.4 million dollars.
And all this just for the money from his action on the dance floor, since the Greek Freak has huge income from advertising and other activities. According to Forbes, it will be the fourth highest paid NBA player for the 2023/24 seasonwith $85.6 million in revenue, behind only LeBron James ($117.6 million), Steph Curry ($101.9 million) and Kevin Durant ($91.4 million).
Why did you sign now?
Giannis Antetokounmpo had stated in a recent interview that he did not intend to sign an extension with the Bucks now and that he would wait until the summer, probably because with the new television contract in the NBA there would be a new increase in the salary cap and it would ensure extra money. So why did he decide to extend the deal with Milwaukee now?
According to American media, in this way the 29-year-old ace he prepared his next moves and his…next contracts. With an option for 2027/28 himself, the Greek Freak can sign another short extension in 2026, but also another for four additional years in 2028! That is, he ensures himself the ability to renegotiate not one, but two more contracts, which – with the continued increase in the salary cap – will bring him even more money. So it was no coincidence that he now agreed to an extension with the Bucks.
