Marina Paizi and Clairi Benou competed in the qualifying round of the women’s individual saber at the event world cup in Algiers. In the pool stage, Benou scored 2 wins and 4 losses, while Paizi 4 wins and 2 losses.
Benou advanced to the main draw of 128 and overcame the first hurdle of the “knockouts”, that of Georgian Alexandra Kuvaeva (FIE No156), with 15-12. However, in the battle of the round of “64”, which would determine her entry into the main draw, she was defeated 15-12 by the 18-year-old Australian Veronika Vasileva (FIE No. 59) and ended her participation in the competition with the 95th place.
Paizi qualified directly to the board of “64”, in the battle, however, for the “ticket” of the main board, she was defeated 15-7 by the German Felice Herbon (FIE No102) and finished her presence with the 76th place in the competition between in 152 female athletes.
The rivals for Gondoura and Georgiadou
The “baton” will be taken on Friday by the two leading Greek fencers, Dora Goundoura and Despina Georgiadou, who had a guaranteed presence on the main board due to their high positions in the world ranking (No. 3 and No. 4 respectively).
Gundura was drawn to compete in the first match against 18-year-old American Lola Posik (FIE No 113), while Georgiadou will compete against also 18-year-old Bulgarian Ema Neikova (FIE No 106).
The two Greek women are in different “branches” of the table and their only possible “intersection” will be in the final.
