In an article by TelegraphThe Jamie Carragher expresses his objections to the way VAR is used. The English veteran defender believes that the technology is not used properly and causes more problems than it solves. The former Liverpool ace says:
“Football needs an honest discussion about VAR because it ruins a lot of games. The direction technology is taking us is far from its original trajectory and we are no longer seeing the sport we enjoy and love. Many games are constantly interrupted by the use of VAR, many coaches or commentators are concerned with his decisions and do not focus on the beautiful moments, skills or tactics. We now talk about refereeing more than ever expecting it to be infallible, knowing that there will always be an element of subjectivity. I used to be an advocate of VAR but now I wonder if we have lost more than we have gained by using it. I’m afraid the answer is yes.
Forget the abolition of VAR. The problem is not the technology, but the way it is used. No one can say a word about line technology, for example. The point is to reduce VAR involvement in some decisions. If used correctly it can work. UEFA’s automated offside system is far superior to what we have in the Premier League. We should draw a line at line technology and offside. The biggest problem for me is how VAR handles penalties and sending offs. Last year we had 30 red cards in the Premier League and this year after 11 games we already have 25! Football is not played in slow motion. Slow motion and frozen images do not represent what is happening in real time.
VAR is here to stay, but we must ensure that the technology assists referees and does not replace them or help undermine them. If we continue as we are, technology will continue to pollute the game rather than help it. Some authorities should do something immediately, otherwise football will turn into a… VARosphere».
