With a 7-0 run by Edwards in overtime, Bayern defeated Armani Milano 91-84 (also 76-76) for the 12th game of the Euroleague and reached 6-6 their record, approaching the top eight and leaving the champion of Italy at 4-8 and far from qualifying.
The match went through many fluctuations and various leads for both opponents, with Pablo Lasso’s players equalizing with two three-pointers in the last minute and Edwards taking the “baton” in his hands in the extra five minutes and giving the pink card to Bavarians.
The latter reached 32 points, having the support of Ibaka with 20, Wyler-Bubb with 14 and Francisco with 11 points. For the Italians, Shields played almost alone with 26 points, supported by Hall, Meli and Voigtman with 10 points.
The match
With a 6-0 run, Armani took an 8-3 lead led by Shikma, who confirmed his terrible state of late. Edwards starred in a 5-0 Bayern rout to equalise, but the Italian champions responded in kind and so did Meli with a personal run to put Ettore Messina’s men +7. The Bavarians found many offensive options and with an 8-0 run made it 19-18, but Armani responded with a 5-0 run for 19-23 and the first period ended at 22-25.
Bortolani made it 22-27 at the start of the second period, but 5-0 tied the game with Pablo Lasso’s field goal. Hines took the situation into his own hands and with a personal run of 5-0 brought it 27-32 and the new 5-0 run of the Italians brought it 29-37. Francisco led an 11-0 run for the Germans to make it 40-37 and a 4-0 run in the final seconds made it 44-39 at halftime.
On a 4-0 run to start the third period, Bayern got within 48-39, but an 8-0 run by Armani with their regionals cut it to 48-47. Bayern responded inside the opponent’s racket with a 5-0 run and made it 53-47 and 55-50, with Voigtmann finishing the quarter at 55-52.
Back-to-back 3-pointers on either side kept the lead tied at the start of the fourth quarter, but Feigdman led a 5-0 run for the Italians’ 58-62 lead. Flacadori’s three-pointer made it 61-65. Wyler-Bubb took the “baton” on offense and helped a 7-0 run for 68-65. Armani responded with three three-pointers, two by Shields for 68-74 and he made it 70-76. There, however, Bayern found two three-pointers in the last minute of the match, one with Edwards and one with Ibaka in the breath for 76-76 and overtime.
At the start of the extra five minutes, the two teams went basket-to-basket until 82-82, but that’s when Edwards “armed” himself, scoring seven consecutive points and bringing the score to 89-82. Weiler-Bubb ended the German’s 9-0 run and we reached the final 91-84.
