Carlos Queiroz has stepped down as coach of Qatar’s national team less than a year after signing a four-year deal to coach the Asian champions, and with just over a month until the country hosts the next Asian Cup. Soon after, Qatar’s football federation announced its agreement with Spanish coach Marquez Lopez who will be the Portuguese’s successor.

The former Real Madrid and Portugal coach took over as Felix Sanchez’s replacement in February, tasked with helping Qatar qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

The QFA expresses its sincere gratitude to Coach Queiroz for his unwavering commitment, leadership and contribution during his tenure as coach of the national team. We wish him success in his future endeavours“, says the announcement of the federation.

Queiroz guided Qatar to victories over Afghanistan and India in November in the second round of Asian qualifying for the next World Cup, with the Qataris chasing one of the eight spots available for teams from the continent in the expanded last-48 stage groups.

Qatar won their first Asian Cup title under Sanchez in 2019 and the country are set to defend the trophy on home soil next month when they face China, Tajikistan and Lebanon in the group stage.

The Gulf nation is hosting the continental championship after original host China relinquished the rights due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
