Manchester City-Fluminense: Battle for the top of the world

by

The top of the world only has room for one team. Manchester City and Fluminense face off tonight in its final Club World Cupwhich will take place in Jeddah (20:00).

His team Pep Guardiola claims its fifth title in 2023 and this particular trophy for the first time in its history. The European champion easily overcame (3-0) the obstacle Urava Red Diamonds, while the holder of the Copa Libertadores, defeated Al Ahli 2-0.

They set up yet another Europe vs. Latin America final, the 13th in 19 competitions – which will decide the last Club World Cup title in the current format that began in 2005.

The English champions have a full absentee book again. Kevin De Bruyne, Jeremy Doku and Erling Haaland will be absent, while on the other hand Fernando Diniz is not facing any injury problems.

Manchester City are trying to become the first English team to win the trophy on their maiden appearance. Manchester United (2000), Liverpool (2005) and Chelsea (2012) failed.

THE Pep Guardiola is aiming to become the first manager to win four FIFA Club World Cups having guided Barcelona to glory in 2009 and 2011, and Bayern Munich to the title in 2013, sharing the record with Carlo Ancelotti.

O Marceloat 35, is claiming the 29th title in his career and fifth in the institution, as the former Olympiakos ace had won the trophy four times with Real (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018).

THE Fabio, 43, is set to become the oldest player to appear in the final. He will take the record from Paolo Maldini, who was 39 when he represented Milan against Boca Juniors in Japan in 2007.

Note that if the teams are tied after 90 minutes, an extra 30 minutes will be played. If at the end of extra time they are still tied, the trophy will be decided on penalties. Only one Club World Cup final has gone to penalties, with Corinthians beating Vasco da Gama in 2000. Four others have gone to extra time, with Barcelona beating Estudiantes 2-1 in 2009, Real Madrid overcoming Casima Adlers 4 -2 in 2016, Liverpool beat Flamengo in 2019 and Chelsea grab a win over Palmeira in 2021.

Earlier (16:30), Urawa and Al Ahli will fight for third place in the tournament.
