“By fire and iron” Barcelona came third

After a dramatic match, Barcelona defeated Baskonia 89-95 for the 19th game of the Euroleague and, with a 13-6 record, remained firmly in third place, leaving the Basques at 10-9 and just outside the eight.

The “blaugrana” led by +5 at the end of the first half, but with several runs Baskonia reached +6 in the third period, but most of the solutions of the Catalans in the fourth period brought them to +4 and the two missed three-pointers by the Basques gave them finally the victory.

Leaders for Roger Grimau’s team were Vesely with 23, Parker with 17, Hernangometh with 16 and Parra with 13 points. For the Basques, Howard stood out with 21, Sendekerskis with 14 and Costello with 11 points.

The match

With a 7-0 run and Veseli as the star, Barcelona reached 7-3 at the start of the match. Satoranski brought +6 for the “blaugrana”, but Baskonia’s two consecutive three-pointers brought the tie. With a 5-0 run, Dusko Ivanovic’s men got to +2, but the Catalans responded in kind for 19-16 and Roger Grimau’s regionals helped +1 to +3 and 24-23 to complete the first period.

A 7-0 run by Barcelona at the start of the second period made it 31-23 for the “Blaugrana” to have many solutions inside and outside the opponent’s racket. Hernangometh with his consecutive points brought +8 for the Catalans, with Vesely and his personal actions keeping it at these levels and Miller-McIntyre ended the half at 47-42. Barcelona had 13/21 two-pointers and 14 rebounds and Baskonia 9/16 two-pointers and 15 rebounds.

Baskonia with a 5-0 run at the beginning of the third period brought the score to 47-47 and with a 6-0 it reached 51-51 with the right choices in the opponent’s basket and the many rebounds for surprises and now the match was going to +2 with +4 for the Basques. Sendekerskis took action for Baskonia’s +6 and Miller-McIntyre’s three-pointer made it 62-68 at the end of the quarter.

A 5-0 run to start the fourth quarter made it +11 for Baskonia. Barcelona found the solutions with three-pointers and reduced the score to 68-73. Marinkovic’s three-pointer made it 70-77 and “cut off the legs” of the Grimau players’ counterattack. Barcelona responded with a 6-0 run to make it 76-77 and Vesely tied it at 78-78. Two 4-0 runs on either side made it 82-82 and with a total 8-0 run for Barcelona Vesely made it 86-82.

Howard’s three-pointer cut it to 86-85 and Parra’s shots made it 88-85 at 11”. Monecke missed a 3-pointer at 7′, Costello fouled Vesely, who hit a shot to make it 89-85, and Miller-McIntyre missed a 3-pointer at 1′.
