Aris: Toliopoulos’ historic performances in assists and earned fouls

by

THE Vasilis Toliopoulos made a career appearance at victory of Aris over AEK (91-93)while he made history with two distinct performances.

Handing out 10 assists tied his career high at Stoiximan Basket League. He had that many in the 8th matchday of last year’s championship and in Aris’ home game against Lavrio.

The Aris captain recorded the 20th double-digit performance in his team’s history in the professional league and at the same time joined an even shorter list. He became the fourth player of the “yellow and black” with 2+ double-digit assist performances after Giannis Cioutis (4), Anthony Cowan (2) and Josh Huggins (2).

At the same time, the 12 earned fouls of Toliopoulos put him high on yet another historical list of Aris. It was just the 7th 12+ earned foul performance by a Black and Yellow player while also tying the second most in professional League history. The record has been held since December 10, 2006 by Terrell Castle who won 13 fouls in the away derby against PAOK.

The international guard’s 12 earned fouls yesterday are the second most this year, after Anthony Cowan had 14 in Prometheus’ home game against AEK Betsson.

In addition to the 10 assists he had, Vassilis Toliopoulos also scored 25 points. Until yesterday, Aris was the only team in this year’s Stoiximan Basket League that did not have a double-double and found it with these performances of its captain in the match of the 15th game. Toliopoulos scored his 11th double-double of the year with points and assists, becoming the 6th to make the list but the 1st Greek.

In the last seven years, this was the 6th double-double of points and assists by an Aris Midea player…

2019-20

Lefteris Bohorides: With Kolossos out – 24p, 10as.

2017-18

Giannis Athenaiou: With Lavrio inside – 12p, 12as.

2021-22

Anthony Cowan: With Apollon Patras out – 15 points, 12 assists.

2022-23

Josh Huggins: With Olympiakos at home – 14 points, 13 assists.

With AEK away – 10p, 11as.

Vassilis Toliopoulos: With Lavrio inside – 10p, 10as.

But there is also continuity in the achievements of Vassilis Toliopoulos:

-Having made 10 shots (9/10) he reached and exceeded 300. In 192 games in the Stoiximan Basket League he shot 82.89% (252/304).

-By stealing the ball once in yesterday’s derby, he entered the top 30 of the relevant list of Aris Midea in the professional Championship. He tied Miroslav Raicevic and Mohamed Pasalic for 30th and 52 steals.

-Toliopoulos’ 25 points is the best performance by an Aris player in the last 15 away derbies with AEK Betsson. The previous highest was the 28 points scored by PJ Tucker in the 2010-11 season game, when Aris prevailed 74-65.

Still on an individual level for Aris, Diamantis Slaftsakis “caught” Dimitris Vergini in the 25th place on the list of most games in the Stoiximan Basket League with the “yellow and black”, reaching 79 yesterday.

Yesterday’s victory of Aris Midea, in addition to all its other benefits, also had an interesting statistical extension. The Thessaloniki side made it two consecutive doubles against AEK Betsson – having won last year’s corresponding game 76-63 – for the first time in the history of these derbies for the professional league (since 1992-93) after the previous five were followed by defeats .

To find such a streak or longer we would have to go back 34 years. In the first years of the A1 National Division, Aris had scored four consecutive doubles against AEK…

1986-87: 94-104

1987-88: 87-103

1988-89: 72-82

1989-90: 74-75
