American Erin Jackson won the gold medal in the 500 m speed skating event this Sunday (13) at the Winter Olympics in Beijing. It is the first US gold in this event since 1994.
Jackson narrowly missed out on the competition. In the qualifiers of his country, she slipped and failed enough to compete in China.
Her friend Britanny Bowe, however, who had already qualified for the 1,000m and 1,500m events, gave up her seat. In the end, the American team got another spot, and Bowe was also able to compete in the 500 m. She ranked 16th in Beijing.
Blizzard delays competitions
A blizzard in northern China forced the postponement of some tests on Sunday, such as the slopestyle ski qualifier (a test in which competitors do maneuvers in obstacles), rescheduled for Monday (14). The same happened with the women’s qualifiers of the ski aerials.
Temperatures reached -11ºC in Zhangjiakou, the city 125 km northwest of Beijing that will host the races. Even under this environment, the 4 x 10 km cross country relay event took place.

Hungary wins its first individual gold in history
Figure skater Shaong Liu gave Hungary its first individual gold medal in an edition of the Winter Olympics this Sunday (13). He won the 500m short track event. Russian Konstantin Ivliev took silver, and Canadian Steven Dubois completed the podium.
