The quietest winter transfer window of the decade in the Premier League

by

In most European leagues the transfer window ended on the last day of January. In Premier League the teams had one more day at their disposal, in which they were active, mainly choosing to loan players.

England’s first division teams bought 18 players and this number is the record for the fewest movements of the decade. In fact, if compared to the 62 completed transfers in January 2023, this year’s number seems minimal. At the same time, the average of winter transfers in the Premier reaches 40, while only in 2021 there were fewer than 25 moves.

The causes of the situation are mainly economic, since its large groups Island they are up against the league’s profitability and sustainability rules and face severe penalties. In addition, the investments of the Arabian teams were significantly reduced, with the result that the clubs kept their core and did not look for immediate replacements.

The most active team was Aston Villa who made four player purchases, acquiring Morgan Rodgers, Kosta Nedelikovic, Joe Gauci and Lino Sousa. The largest total financial investment was made by Crystal Palace, where it took out of its coffers 29 million euros for the purchase of Adam Wharton and Daniel Munios.

The movements of the teams contending for the title were counted on the fingers of one hand, since their only moves were the acquisition of Claudio Etcheverry from Manchester City and that of Radu Dragusin from Tottenham.
