THE Evangelia Plataniotis and the Sophia Malkogeorgou they returned from Doha and the World Swimming Championships with their ticket to the Olympics in hand. The two gymnasts were sixth in the free duet and booked a place for Paris, while the first had on her chest the gold and silver medals she won in artistic swimming.
“I have been in the sport for 20 years, I work very hard. For the last two years I have been aiming for gold. Last year I didn’t make it, but this year there was no way I was going to let it go. I’m so glad that we made it together with my friend, Sofia. It is an honor for me to participate in the Olympics for the 4th time. It was a difficult race, we hadn’t worked that much as a duo, but everything went as it should and we will be in Paris. I think every athlete has thought about “I’m thinking of giving up”. Every failure made me stronger. Last year when I missed the medal in Fukuoka I told my coach I’m going to Doha to get the gold“, said Platanioti.
“I am very happy, very proud that we achieved something very big. We have a lot of work ahead of us to reach as high as we can in the Olympics“, said Malkogeorgou.
The athletes were welcomed by the Deputy Minister of Sports, Yannis Vroutsis. “The faces of Evangelia and Sophia embody the beauty and power of sports. We are proud, excited, we believe in you and the other kids who are fighting. Greek sports can go very high“, he pointed out.
