Racist attacks in Spanish stadiums have, unfortunately, stopped making news a long time ago. Their latest issue is Nico Williams, at yesterday’s defeat of Bilbao by Atletico Madrid (3-1) for LaLiga.
The 21-year-old striker, who was born in Pamplona to Ghanaian parents, complained that he was the victim of racist insults. As he said, he reported to the referee after he heard monkey yelps as he prepared to take a corner in the first half and the game was stopped momentarily, while moments later, the Spanish international winger scored and celebrated by clapping his hand and indicating the color of his skin.
“I went to shoot in the corner and heard monkey sounds“, he emphasized and added: “There weren’t many. There are fools everywhere. I hope this will change slowly. My celebration was done in anger. It is not normal to be insulted because of the color of your skin».
At the end of the match, the Atlético Madrid midfielder, Koke, was also in favor of Williams: “In our society, there is no place for people who offend like this. Atlético Madrid and all its supporters are for Nico and against these situations, which should not happen in a football stadium or in society. This cannot happen in the age and society in which we live».
??? Nico Williams stopped the game tonight due to racist chants at the Metropolitano.
A few minutes later, Nico scores for Athletic and points to the color of his skin in his celebration.
We’re with you, Nico. ??
