Pre-Paralympic Table Tennis Tournament: In Thailand with Hadjikyriakos, Bournia Greece

The World Pre-Paralympic Table Tennis Tournament takes place May 23-25 with intense competition and high stakes, as just one place in each of the eleven men’s and ten women’s individual events (with divisions 1-2 merged) qualifies in the “city of light”.

Greece, of course, will be present at another World Pre-Paralympic Games with two of its top names. The European team runner-up, Marios Hatzikyriakos, who had competed in the 2021 Paralympic Games in Tokyo, placing 9-16, and the “bronze” world and European champion, Evanthia Bournia.

Hatzikyriakos always competes in class 6 of the standing athletes, while Bournia has been in class 3 of wheelchair athletes since last year, taking on a more difficult task.

The first goal for our representatives is to perform to the best of their abilities, showing for the umpteenth time their own great value and, through competitive performances, to fight for the passing of the qualification to the top event. The 2024 Paralympic Games will take place August 28-September 8.

The Greek mission is going to Pattaya in two installments, as informed by the press release of E.A.OM.-A.Me.A. “On Monday 20/5, Marios Chatzikyriakos (grade 6) left with the federal coach Eleftheria Daundakis. Their expenses are covered by the Hellenic Paralympic Committee, as part of the Paralympic preparation.

On Tuesday 21/5 in the afternoon, Evanthia Irini Bournia (class 3) left with her coach Lydia Ignatovich (at her own expense).

The Pre-Paralympic tournament will take place at the Exhibition Center of the city (23-25/5), with the two Greek athletes claiming their qualification in Paris”.

The sport’s World Federation notes that the quality of entries in Pattaya underlines the progress made in Paralympic table tennis in recent years and lists some top athletes from the Czech Republic, England, Japan, France, Slovakia, Poland , Chile, China, Romania and other countries.

“As we approach the Paralympic Games in Paris, the World Qualifying Tournament in Pattaya promises to be a top event, with top athletes vying for a place on the biggest stage through first place in their class.”

There, we see that the system is knocked out from the start. The draws take place on the Wednesday before the opening. In men’s class 6 there are 14 entries and in women’s class 3 seven (one from each country).
