Germany: Two “temporary” arrests of “supporters of the Greek basketball team” for the incidents in Berlin

THE Berlin police identified and arrested temporarily last Monday two peopleas suspected of involvement in episodes that occurred among fans of the Greek teams, which last weekend participated in the “Final Four” of EuroLeague of basketball.

According to the announcement of the Police, in cooperation with the federal police, last Monday they were “certainly identified” two men, aged 30 and 32at the Berlin-Brandenburg BER airport, using the “Super Recognizer” system and while there had been an intensive examination of the available visual material.

The two men, “supporters of a Greek basketball teamwere going to fly to their homeland” and were temporarily arrested, the statement said, for the clash between fans in hotel of the district of Simmenstadt, in the north-west of Berlin.

The competent services verified the personal details of the two suspects and implemented identification measures, as part of an investigation on the suspicion of “particularly serious disturbance of the peace”, the Police point out.

The two men were then released and left under police supervision. “The investigation into the altercation at the hotel, including the analysis of extensive footage, is ongoing,” the statement said.

On May 26, the Berlin Police had announced that the previous night about 80 people broke into a hotel where fans of the rival Greek team had stayed. Baseball bats and bats were used in the incidents, and firecrackers and smoke bombs were used, triggering the hotel’s smoke detector, and there was extensive damage to the lobby.
