Listen Europe: San Marino WON after 20 years!

by

It will be etched in history September 5, 2024 for the San Marino! The small state (5th smallest on the planet), located in the central Italian peninsula, on the north-eastern side of the Apennines, is celebrating the first victory of its national football team after 20 years!

In the Nations League premiere for the 2024/25 season, San Marino won 1-0 Liechtenstein at the San Marino Stadium, with the golden scorer 19-year-old Niko Sensoli! The youngster plays for the San Marino Academy and last year had a spell on loan from the Italian 4th division Sangiuliano.

Needless to say, Sensoli’s goal in the 53rd minute was celebrated almost like a… golden goal in extra time of the final World Cupso you can understand what happened after the final whistle!

The few hundred fans of San Marino, standingespecially after 1-0, they didn’t stop shouting and as soon as the game ended, the outburst of joy was unprecedented, at the moment when, inside the stadium, the home team, players and technical team, became a mess! Quite a few of them, in fact they were crying uncontrollably! For the record, the manager who led San Marino to their first win in 20 years is the former Italian stopper Roberto Cevoli!

An incredible statistic is that San Marino had to win 140 games and more than 12,600 minutes! His last victory was in a friendly, again against Liechtenstein 1-0, on April 28, 2004! The goal then was achieved by the top scorer in the history of Liechtenstein with… 8 goals, Andy Selva.

Now, with this “three points”, San Marino takes the lead in Group 1 of League D and dreams of promotion to the 3rd division!
