Bronze medal for Csokas at the European Duel Sword Cup in Budapest

by

Vassilis Tsokas stood out among the 15 Greek entries in the youth individual on the first day of the European U17 Duel Sword Cup in Budapest and with very good fencing he reached his first international podium in a high-level event. The Hungarian capital hosted the second stop of the European Fencing Confederation (EFC) Junior/Junior (U17) competition series, a particularly demanding event with 374 entries from 40 different countries in the junior category.

Three Greeks reached the board of 128, Fotis Minas (AO Theseas Heraklion), Vassilis Tsokas (OXIF) and Achilleas Antoniou (AOFIPS Iris). Antoniou was defeated 15-14 by the British Alex Nicholas and took 96th place. Minas defeated the Swiss Arthur Perret 15-9, as did Tsokas against the Canadian Xising Wang 10-8.

On the scoreboard of “64”, the American Christopher Davoodian managed to “bend” Minas with 15-10, with Heraklion eventually taking the 34th place in the competition.

Tsokas, on the other hand, continued his winning streak with 15-10 against the Dutch Jan Cohen-Fersteinen.

The athlete who trains with his brother, Nikos Tsoka, did not stop there, after with excellent performances he eliminated the Swiss Louis Reniat (15-11) in the “32” board, in the “16” board the Hungarian Aron Petrovsky (15 -14) and in the quarter-final he eliminated the world junior champion and European bronze medalist in the category, the Turkish Doruk Erolcevic, 15-13.

Having secured a place on the podium, he faced the American Andy Zheng in the semi-final, who stopped the athlete from Florida with 15-10.

In the final, Zeng was defeated by his American teammate Nathaniel Wimmer 15-9, with the latter winning the gold medal, while on the third step of the podium, together with Tsoka, the also American Daniel Chirasnia climbed.

The fencer from Florina was therefore the top European athlete in the competition, while with the third place he will secure 60 points for the European ranking of teenagers, in which he is expected to “climb” from No. 13 to No. 4.
