In the state of Sao Paulothe country’s most populous, 7 people lost their lives from the fall of trees and walls of buildings that collapsed, the state Civil Protection agency announced.
In Brasilia, the capital of the country, one soldier lost his life and another was injured by a falling tree as they were lowering the flag in front of the police headquarters, according to the military administration of the area.
Back in the capital, House of Representatives officials had to open umbrellas during a plenary session due to water falling from the roof, while leaks affected electronic equipment, according to images shared by media and social media. .
Much of the city of Sao Paulo was left in the dark and at least 1.6 million households were without electricity, energy group Enel announced at the same time.
“In some areas, entire sections of the network have been damaged and kilometers of network will have to be rebuilt, replacing poles, transformers and other equipment,” the group said in a message.
The torrential rains come on the heels of one of Brazil’s worst droughts since records began, fueling wildfires.
In Brasilia the heavy rains were greeted with relief after a record 165 days without rain.
