Panathinaikos suffered a very heavy defeat on Thursday night (24/10) for the 2nd matchday of the League Phase of the Conference League. The “greens” were unable to cope with Chelsea’s frighteningly high level in the packed OAKA and “crashed” with a score of 4-1.
Accepting this defeat, the “clover” tied the biggest score at home, as this has been repeated twice in the past.
Specifically, the first time that Panathinaikos experienced defeat (1-4) was in the 1962/63 seasonwith Polonia Bitom as an opponent in Leoforo. The Poles in that match had taken the lead with Liberda, with Vasilis Panakis to equalize. However, the visitors still scored three goals and left Athens with the “double” for the European Champions Cup.
Something similar happened 30 years later. The season 1993/94 Panathinaikos hosted at OAKA Bayer Leverkusen for the Cup Winners’ Cup with the “aspirins” winning 4-1.
The German team took the lead in the 42nd minute with Paulo Sergio, while two minutes later Christoph Vazeja equalized for Ivica Osim’s team. In the second half, however, the “greens” collapsed after conceding three more goals from Leverkusen with 4-1 being formed by the goals of Tom in the 52′, Kristen in the 59′ and Hapal in the 72′.
