Lifetime sailing champion o Emilios Papathanasiou. The 51-year-old athlete won the title of panhellenic champion for the 25th consecutive year, as together with Stelios Noutsos they were the winners of the panhellenic Star championship that ended yesterday in Falirikos Ormos.
The match was organized by N.O. 78 under the auspices of the Sailing Federation and 7 races were held. The Papathanasiou-Noutsos duo of Olympiakos won all the races and climbed to the highest step of the podium, collecting 6 points.
Giorgos Karadimas – Marios Karadimas (I.OP./SEANATK) finished in second place with 13 points and Antonis Tsotras – Evangelos Dolianitis (OSFP) in third place with 16 points.
Regarding his historic success, Emilios Papathanasiou stated the following on the official website of the Federation: “I’ve always said that in sports, duration matters. Whether it is an athlete or a team. Time confirms your worth. Winning the Pan-Hellenic Championship for 25 years in a row means a lot. It is a great distinction, because Greece has a tradition in sailing. We have very good athletes and especially in recent years a fantastic job is being done to bring out great young sailors. I am happy that at the same time as sailing I can contribute to sport through my administrative duties. Whether it was in the past for PAE Olympiacos and the Amateur, or now as a member of the board of the World Sailing Federation. It’s not easy, but I love what I do and I’m happy to respond».
Of course he has no intention of stopping. “Of course I will continue sailing. As long as I am strong and can claim medals I will run. On the positive side, I have recovered from my many serious injuries and with the help of the doctors and my people I manage to maintain myself at a high level. In sports there is both winning and losing. If you don’t know how to lose, you don’t know how to win. I’m ready for anything. I will continue the intensive work and prepare for the world championship in Croatia and the European championship in Italy where I will try my best. The Panhellenic championship was strong and we performed very well. I wish and hope that the continuation will be similar».
