Bayern coach says he received 450 death threats after elimination

Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann said on Friday he had received 450 death threats after the German team was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Champions League by Villarreal.

“I know I would always get criticism from all sides. It’s normal and I can face it. But 450 death threats on Instagram is harder,” said Nagelsmann.

“If people want to kill me, that’s one thing, but if they attack my mother, who is not interested in football, I cannot understand”, lamented the coach.

“As soon as they turn off the television, people forget all decency and think they’re right, that’s the worst,” he added.

Asked if he plans to denounce the attackers, Nagelsmann said there were too many threats to make that possible.

“There would be no end. I get threats after every game, no matter the winner.”

Julian Nagelsmann is the second member of Bayern Munich’s surroundings to be threatened on the internet this week after the elimination of the Champions League.

Sports director Hasan Salihamidzic’s wife and son also reported threats after the game, showing screenshots of messages received on Instagram.

Considered one of the favorites for the title, Bayern ended up eliminated in the quarterfinals, against the surprising Villarreal of Spanish coach Unai Emery.

The Germans lost the first leg in Spain by 1-0. Playing at home, they went ahead on the scoreboard, but suffered a draw by 1-1 in the final moments of the match.
