The Greek National Road Cycling Team starts in 2022 with new goals, as a new Olympic cycle begins. At the helm is Stefanos Lyrantonakis, holder of a UCI level 3 coach diploma who, with full awareness of responsibility and respect for the history of the National team, tries to give new motivation to cyclists.

This year is characterized as recognizable and is a season that the Federal coach wants to discover the potential of his cyclists and their dynamics. The main goal is to give equal opportunities to all. Also, one of the main axes of the new program is the utilization of the category of teenagers and young people, in which there are some talented children of the new generation.

The PPC International Tour of Hellas is a special event and target race for the athletes of the National team. Mr. Lyrantonakis had the pleasure to participate as an athlete of the National team in the Tour of Greece in 1998, when he knows very well its importance for the domestic public, but also for his athletes. The main collaborator of the Greek coach is the experienced Fotis Zeglis, an important figure of cycling in the country, both as a cyclist and as a coach.

In 2022, the Greek cyclists who will be in the mission of Ethniki, had the opportunity to compete in international races in Rhodes and abroad, both with the National team and with their clubs. Taking into account the results in the races, but also the “numbers” of the training camp that took place in Crete, in the pre-selection are the following 11 cyclists: Arvanitou Nikiforos (Theseus, Java Kiwi Atlantico), Giannoutsos Miltiadis (Aeolos), Drakos Nikolaodos (Diagos ), Kastrantas Charalambos (Aeolos, Kuwait Cycling Team), Kortsidakis Michalis (POH Talos), Moutsios Martinos (PO Rodilios), Bouglas Giorgos (PS Kronos Nikaia, Spor Toto Cycling), Periklis Elias (PS Kros) Tzos Polzos Talos, Kuwait Cycling Team), Christakos Dimitris (Alfa Kallitheas), Christopoulos Heller Panagiotis (RV Pfeil Magstadt)

The 11 athletes have a lot of experience, several kilometers on their feet so far, while five of them are part of the new generation being under 25 years old. In the pre-selection are the two athletes who represented our country at the Tokyo Olympics, Tzortzakis Polychronis (Road) and Pericles Elias (Mountain Bike, XCO).

The Cypriot Cycling Federation was founded in 1978, with the aim of developing the sport, and as it seems, it has succeeded with great success! This is evidenced by the participation of athletes in the Olympic Games, but also the excellent results that took place in international competitions, World and European championships.

In recent years, the National Team of Cyprus has successfully participated in international competitions, among them this year the PPC Cycling Tour of Greece. In this way, young athletes are given the opportunity to establish themselves and improve. At the same time, the foundations are being created for a continuous production process, which will develop cyclists – not only in training – experientially.

The work of Anestis Kourbetis needs special mention. The Greek coach and athlete of Saturn Nice, with his knowledge, talent and passion, managed to transmit a new vision to all cyclists, reforming the institution of the National Team on the island of Aphrodite.

Anestis Kourbetis is a highly trained coach, holds a degree in Physical Education and Sports from the Kapodistrian University of Athens. Holder of a Master’s Degree from the University of Thessaly in the Program “Exercise and Health” with a master’s thesis in the correlation of the functional threshold protocol (FTP), with laboratory measurements of aerobic capacity in cyclists.

He also holds a diploma from the UCI Coach Development Program CDP Level 3 from the UCI World Cycling Center (WCC) in Switzerland. Based on his knowledge, he selected 6 athletes for the participation of the Cyprus National Team in the PPC International Tour of Hellas.
