Sotheby’s, which auctioned the jacket and a host of Aldrin’s other space memorabilia, says his Teflon-coated jacket is the most valuable American item to have flown into space
Buzz Aldrin’s jacket from the historic Apollo 11 moon mission has just been sold at auction, setting a record for American space flight memorabilia.
The historic piece of flight gear worn by Aldrin on NASA’s 1969 mission to the moon has sold to a buyer for $2,772,500.
Sotheby’s, which auctioned the jacket and a slew of Aldrin’s other space memorabilia, says his Teflon-coated jacket is the most valuable American item to have flown into space.
Buzz didn’t wear the jacket when he walked on the surface of the moon, he wore his spacesuit for that part of the mission, but he actually spent more time in the jacket than anything else during the Apollo 11 mission.
As you can see, the white jacket has his name tag—his first name is Edwin—above the Apollo 11 mission emblem, and there’s an American flag on the left shoulder.
