Tourism revenue associated with the mountain is estimated to be about $50 million annually

Tanzania has installed high-speed internet on Mount Kilimanjaro to help climbers and tourists send selfies at 12,000 feet.

Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa with a height of 5,895 meters. It is located in northeastern Tanzania and very close to the Equator. Those who climb Kilimanjaro will now be able to access the internet and upload their snaps to Instagram after the service goes live.

The technological feat on one of the volcano’s three summits comes ahead of another mission to install an antenna on Uhuru Peak later this year, which is 19,000 feet above sea level.

In a tweet on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, Tanzania’s minister of information and communications, Nape Moses Nnauye, said the achievement means broadband is now installed on the “rooftop of Africa”.

A similar system called ‘Everest Link’ provides service in the remote Himalayan mountain region of Nepal, with its mast at Everest Base Camp – at 17,600 feet – currently making it the highest internet service in the world.

Kilimanjaro is now a popular tourist destination, attracting around 35,000 people each year, as well as an important source of income for Tanzania.

Tourism revenue associated with the mountain is estimated to be about $50 million annually.
