Brazil fined Apple and banned iPhone sales until the company put the charger back in the box.
Apple angered consumers when it stopped including chargers in its phones in 2020, but it reportedly saved the company billions of dollars.
Brazil’s Justice Ministry fined the company 12.275 million reais (£2 million) on Tuesday for selling substandard products, Reuters reported.
The ministry said the iPhones are being sold without essential components in a “targeted and discriminatory practice against consumers.”
As a result, Apple won’t be able to sell iPhone 12 and newer models until it starts to include chargers.
The company tried to argue that the practice would benefit the environment, but the Brazilian authorities were not convinced. The ministry said there was no evidence that cell phones without chargers reduced their carbon footprint.
Apple has announced that it will appeal this decision, saying in a statement:
The move would be a blow to the company, which plans to launch its latest phone, the iPhone 14, today.
Rumors about its design have been circulating for weeks, including the return of the battery percentage indicator and the arrival of new colors.
New product launches will be announced at the “Far Out” event scheduled for today at 10am PT (6pm BST).
