Engineer Masayuki Uemura, creator of the Super Nintendo and NES consoles, the famous Nintendinho, died aged 78 on Monday (6). The information about the death, however, was only released this Thursday (9), in a note from the Center for the Study of Video Games at Ritsumeikan University, in Kyoto, where he was a professor. The cause of death was not disclosed.

“He was one of the geniuses behind some of our best gaming memories,” defined the Japanese channel Archipel, which specializes in documentaries about Japanese culture.

The developer of Super Nintendo was a pioneering scholar of games.

Uemura began his professional career at Nintendo in 1972 and was known for being the creator of the gaming system that became known as the Nintendo Entertainment System, released in 1983. The Super Nintendo was released nearly a decade later.

“If you had a video game in the 1990s, it’s very likely that you owe this gentleman hours of fun,” wrote a fan of the Japanese game company on social media. “Another genius gone,” said another.

The engineer was also a producer of sports and classic games like Mario Bros. He stayed at Nintendo until 2004, when he retired. But he continued to act as an advisor, researcher and teacher.
