The parent company of Facebook, Meta, announced this Monday (24) a new supercomputer to increase its data processing capacity.

The American tech giant, immersed in several battles over the handling of private data and the circulation of fake news, reported that its new processor core is capable of multiplying its current capacity by 20.

Thousands of hard drives are part of this new system, capable of “instantly analyzing text, images and video at the same time, developing new augmented reality tools and much more”, indicated a note published on the blog of two artificial intelligence researchers at the company.

This division of Facebook is investigating, for example, tools that will allow people who speak two different languages to communicate through real-time translation.

“Today we are introducing the AI Research SuperCluster (RSC), which we believe is among the fastest AI supercomputers running today and will be the fastest in the world when it is fully built in mid-2022,” Meta said.

Platforms like Facebook and search engines like Google have been repeatedly criticized for the way they process and use their users’ internet browsing, both their personal data and the information that interests them.

Both companies face lawsuits in the European Union over the illegal transfer of data to the United States.

On their blog, Facebook researchers say that combating disinformation is one of the “critical aspects” for the development of artificial intelligence.

In addition, they explain, the massification of high-definition video presents challenges for today’s processing capacity.
