GSEE: Unemployment at 20.5% for graduates specializing in Information Technology

The data of the research of KANEP-GSEE for the workforce that specializes in digital skills and unemployment are revealing.

36.4% of those employed in Greece have a specialization in Information Technology, but the unemployment rates in this sector remain higher than general unemployment.

Despite the fact that there is a large supply of employees but also a great demand from the companies, which declare inability to fill positions, the absorption remains low.

Unemployment in the Information Society remains at 20.5% in Greece, while general unemployment is at 16.3%.

Companies in Greece are looking for specialized staff, but they express inability to fill the positions and 69% state that those interested have high financial requirements, 63% that they have no relevant work experience and 54% that there is a lack of qualifications and qualifications.

The data, in fact, refer to 2020, a year when due to the pandemic, there was a great need to develop distance work and find people with ease in using the internet.

However, a similar trend is observed in Europe, where an even greater percentage of companies express inability to fill their positions, by 2020.

At the same time, 1 in 5 companies in the EU as a whole, according to 2020 data, implemented training programs aimed at developing or enriching the knowledge of their staff in Information Technology. The corresponding percentage in Greece is 12% with the country ranking 25th out of 27, followed by Bulgaria and Romania.

According to the survey, 2 out of 10 people aged 25-64 in the active population stated that they attended a lifelong education, training or education program from the time the coronavirus arrived in Greece (March 2020) onwards (until July of 2021), of which 90% relate exclusively to distance learning through e-learning programs.

3 in 10 participants (30%) stated that they covered the costs of the program themselves, 46% that the costs were covered mainly through sponsored / co-financed programs and at a much lower rate (15%) by the employer.

Regarding the reasons for participation, 57% of the participants stated that attending the training program was a personal initiative, 3 out of 10 participants (30%) stated that they were offered the opportunity through their work, while the remaining 15% said that attending was required by their work.
