Representatives of the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (SETE) presented to the president of PASOK – Movement for Change, Nikos Androulakis, the ten-year action plan for tourism development developed by industry.
“The tourism industry of our country, which has been severely affected by the consequences of the pandemic, is now facing the big wave of price increases brought by the increase in energy prices. “With the messages for this year being very positive, we must immediately take all the necessary measures to shield the competitiveness of Greek tourism,” said Mr. Androulakis, welcoming the SETE delegation.
He added that the goal should be a modern, integrated tourism product, with which “we will achieve the extension of the tourist season throughout the year, emphasizing forms of tourism, such as winter and conference tourism, thus creating conditions regional development “, as he noted.
He also pointed out the connection with the agri-food sector, in order to stimulate the extroversion of Greek products through the large stream of visitors to our country.
The president of PASOK-KINAL, described the action plan for tourism development developed by SETE as an important tool and stressed that he “seeks to cover the complete lack of a strategy for tourism on the part of the government”.
“We welcome any effort that contributes to our tourism development, however, we believe that drawing up a strategic plan for the country’s tourism is primarily the responsibility of the government. “PASOK – Movement for Change will contribute in this direction with all its forces”, underlined Mr. Androulakis.
PASOK-KINAL announcement states that during the meeting, the long-standing problems of Greek tourism were also discussed, concerning infrastructure such as ports and airports, energy and water networks, as well as waste management that affect the operation of tourism and quality of Greek destinations.
The issue of the shortage of qualified personnel was also raised, which intensified during the pandemic, as the country’s tourism income was drastically reduced, while the devaluation of the country’s tourism schools and the lack of interconnection of training programs with tourism companies were stressed.
From all sides, the need for close cooperation was stressed in order for the country’s tourist income, which is an important pillar of the Greek economy, to spread over most of the year and beyond the summer and in more regions of the country.
The meeting was attended by the MP and head of Tourism, D. Biagkis, Odysseas Konstantinopoulos, the former Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism and Secretary of Tourism of the Movement for Change, George Nikitiadis, the spokesman of the Movement for Change, Dimitris Mantzos. From SETE’s side were present the president Giannis Retsos, the vice president, Eftychios Vasilakis, the general director, Maria Gatsou and the general director of INSETE, Elias Kikilias.
