The European Union is creating a “task force” for artificial intelligence. Yesterday, the European Commission unveiled the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Agency, which was established within the Commission. The Service will employ more than 140 employees, including technology experts, administrative assistants, lawyers, policy experts and economists.

The office will ensure consistent implementation of the AI ​​act. This will be achieved with the support of governance bodies in the member states. The TN Agency will also directly enforce the rules for general purpose TN models.

In collaboration with AI developers, the scientific community and other stakeholders, the AI ​​Service will coordinate the development of codes of best practice, conduct testing and evaluation of general purpose AI models, request information and impose sanctions when necessary.

To ensure informed decision-making, the IT Service will work with Member States and the wider expert community through dedicated forums and expert groups. At the EU level, the AI ​​Service will work closely with the European Artificial Intelligence Council, which is made up of representatives of the member states.

The scientific group of independent experts will ensure a strong link with the scientific community and further expertise will be gathered in an advisory forum, which will represent a balanced selection of stakeholders, including industry, start-ups and SMEs, academia, groups concern and civil society.

The role of the new service

The IT Service will promote an innovative EU ecosystem. for reliable TN. It will contribute to this by providing advice on best practices and enabling access to AI testbeds, field trials and other European support structures for AI adoption, such as AI testing and experimentation facilities, European Digital Innovation Hubs and TN factories.

It will also support research and innovation activities in the field of artificial intelligence and robotics and implement initiatives such as GenAI4EU to ensure that general purpose AI models produced in Europe and trained on EU supercomputers they are specialized and integrated into innovative applications throughout the economy, stimulating investment.

Finally, the IT Service will ensure a strategic, coherent and effective European approach to IT at international level, which will become a global benchmark.

The organizational changes will take effect on June 16, and the first TN board meeting should take place by the end of June. The TN Agency is drawing up guidelines on the definition of the TN system and prohibitions, which are expected six months after the entry into force of the TN act.
