The launch of Samsung’s smart rings earlier this year put smart rings in the spotlight.
OR Apple will not launch smart rings, the CEO of Finnish health technology company Oura told CNBC, despite speculation that the iPhone giant may be considering entering the product category.
The launch of Samsung’s smart rings earlier this year put smart rings in the spotlight, with one analyst predicting earlier this year that Apple could launch its own smart ring in 2026.
But Tom Hale, chief executive of Oura – which has been developing smart rings since the company was founded in 2013 – expressed confidence that Apple will not enter the space.
“I think Apple isn’t convinced of the value of having both a smart ring and a smart watch at the same time, and they’re not interested in undermining the Apple Watch as a business,” Hale told CNBC on Tuesday.
“I think they’re probably watching Samsung and us closely, but it’s hard to get this product class right,” he said.
It is noted that under CEO Tim Cook, Apple has placed great emphasis on health applications through the Apple Watch and related services.
A smart ring is a type of wearable device with sensors that can give the wearer information about things like their health and sleep. They’re lightweight and the batteries have a long life, and according to fans of the product they’re ideal for wearing all day, even while sleeping, unlike a smartwatch that can be less comfortable.
“Apple is a very focused company that has bet on the clock,” Hale said.
It is noted that Oura recently released the next generation of Oura Ring 4, as the competition in the field of wearable devices increases.
