The Parker Solar Probe NASA’s rover is expected to make history this Christmas Eve as it flies into the sun’s outer atmosphere called the corona on a mission to help scientists learn more about Earth’s nearest star.

“No human-made object has ever passed this close to a star, so Parker will carry data from uncharted territory,” Nick Pinkine, director of operations at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, said in a NASA blog.

Moving at a speed of up to 692,017 km per hour, the spacecraft can withstand temperatures of up to 982 degrees Celsius.

Today Tuesday, at 13:53 (Greece time), the Parker Solar Probe passed within 6.2 million kilometers of the Sun’s surface, closer than any other probe in the past. NASA staff will temporarily lose contact with the craft, waiting to receive a signal on Friday.
