For the first time, internationally, a scale was created to measure addiction to Tiktok.

This is the so -called Tiktok Addiction Scale, which is the first scale internationally focusing exclusively on the use of Tiktok, as the various scales that have been developed to date in the literature are reported either on social media in general or exclusively on Facebook or Instagram.

The scale came from the research study by Assistant Professor Petros Galani, the candidate for Ph.D. Aglaia Katsiroumpa (Nurse IP, MSc), EDIP Olympia Member Constantakopoulou, and Postaderos, Post, Ms.

In fact, the relevant article has been published in the prestigious magazine “Aims Public Health” (Impact Factor = 3.1) and is free available at the DOI link: 10.3934/Publichealth.2024061.

As announced by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the Greek and English edition of the scale to measure addiction to Tiktok (Tiktok Addiction Scale) are free to use.

In addition, the instructions for completing the scale are provided in detail, as well as the way the answers are rated.

More specifically, the Clinical Epidemiology Laboratory of the Department of Nursing Nursing has created and weighted a scale, which can be used exclusively to measure the levels of addiction in Tiktok.

The fact that this scale focuses exclusively on the use of Tiktok makes it extremely important, as, as is typically pointed out by the NCSR, “it enables researchers to focus solely on the use of Tiktok which is now one of the most widespread social media in the world”.

According to the NCSR, the Tiktok Addiction Scale is extremely reliable and valid, and it is simple and easy to complete, enabling researchers to use it in their studies to investigate the use of Tiktok. In addition, the Tiktok Addiction Scale can also be used at a clinical level for the early recognition of people who are at high risk of addiction to Tiktok to seek proper health care in time.

Indicatively, the NCSR reports that there are more than more than 3.5 million users of Tiktok With 33% of users under 25 years of age. In addition, Tiktok users in Greece use the platform for several hours daily and more specifically 42% use it 2-4 hours, while 38% uses it at least 4 hours. Tiktok is today the platform with the highest spread and dynamic, as about 20% of the world’s population has an account on this platform with some countries even having even higher rates. Indicatively, it is reported that in the US about 45% of the population has an account in Tiktok, while in Europe 32% of the population.

Therefore, according to the EKPA, the creation of a scale exclusively to measure the problematic use of Tiktok becomes a “imperative”, as Tiktok differs from other social media media both in the way it operates and in the way it can lead to problematic use. It is noteworthy that in several countries even the possibility of banning the use of Tiktok especially in children and adolescents have already been discussed, as recent studies have shown that it can even affect users’ cognitive functions. It is therefore clear that the reliable and valid measurement of the problematic use of Tiktok is crucial to identifying high -risk users who are addicted to Tiktok.

It should be noted that for the creation and weighting of the Tiktok Addiction Scale, all scientific steps were faithfully applied as defined by the science of research methodology to create a credible and valid scale. Indicatively, it is reported that the Tiktok Addiction Scale has (a) high validity, that is, it actually measures the levels of addiction in Tiktok and (b) high reliability, that is, it leads to similar results after repetitive measurements.

In summary, it is reported that Tiktok Addiction Scale measures the six dimensions of addiction and more specifically the continuous activity, the mood modification, the tolerance (tolerance), the withdrawal sympptoms, the conflict (Conflict) and the Conflict and the Conflict (Relapse). The Tiktok Addiction Scale includes 15 questions and takes about 3-4 minutes to answer.
