Short and simple passwords can be hacked in seconds. On the contrary, big and complex ones take even σε trillions of years to be found by would-be hackers.
This was shown by a recent research by Hive Systems, an American cybersecurity company, which analyzes how long it takes for the average hacker to find the passwords for the world’s online accounts.
According to the study, even an 8-digit code – which contains numbers, symbols, uppercase and lowercase letters – can be broken in less than eight hours.
Anything smaller or simpler can be breached almost immediately, or within minutes, by an experienced hacker, even if it uses completely basic equipment.

In contrast, an 18-digit code – again with numbers, symbols, uppercase and lowercase letters – takes up to 438 trillion years to break, according to the same study.
8-character passwords should be the minimum now, as new technologies have improved the capabilities of hackers.
The cyber security company recommends that you do not use passwords such as “password” and do not recycle the same passwords on different websites. If you do this and a hacker finds your password, then “you will have a big problem”.
Of course, it is not easy to remember an 18-digit code. If it takes the hacker trillions of years to find him, surely the user also needs enough time to remember such a great password.
However, even an 11-digit code – meaning different symbols, numbers, uppercase and lowercase letters – takes 34 years to break. Definitely this is better than just 8 hours.
